Day 2: South Africa Tattoo Convention

Wow! steps, lot of steps, 30,000 of them to be exact. With the jet lag still strong, we were up around 4am for a quick workout to get the legs warmed up before sunrise – it was a peaceful start to the day.

We had room service deliver a two banana mango smoothies and a bowl of oatmeal to share. Plus, they packed us a hiking back pack full of snacks and water. Then we we were off to Table Mountain! Everyone told us that we should hike up and take the cable car down. I know what you are thinking – there is no freaking way those two are taking a cable car down. And we are sure glad we didn’t. We took Platteklip Gorge up, traversed the top of the mountain, and came down Skeleton Gorge on the other side. The way up was lots of boulders, shrubs, and exciting views of Cape Town below. The top was a welcome break for our legs and interestingly had some sandy pathways. The route down was lush with running water, and ended at the botanical gardens!

Next stop, farmers market…or was it? We were told about an awesome Sunday farmers market and our bellies were begging for it (well Brian’s was). So we hopped in an Uber headed toward the waterfront. To our chagrin, the ‘farmers market’ was a tattoo convention with 3 food trucks. AND, the food trucks didn’t open until 1030AM. Not willing to let the smell or site of food out of his mind, Brian waited. And boy was it worth it – fresh grilled chicken, soft bun, crunchy but light slaw, aioli and bbq sauce, what more could a guy want. Well it was good enough that before finishing the first, we ordered a second. Exceptionally satisfied with food in our bellies, (yes, even Anna liked the sandwich) we decided we could walk the 3.5 miles along the coast line back to our hotel.

Within in 100 yards, the actual farmers market smacked us in the face. You know what they say, a cow has 4 stomaches, Brian has more. This farmers market was awesome! Started off with flowers, fruits, pastries, and little shops, opening up to a crowded rectangle of various cuisines. We took a few laps, smiled and laughed about how much cooler this market was than the tattoo market, but honestly still pretty happy about the two chicken sandwiches. Brian went with a scrumptious egg croissant and Anna elected none other than her first açaí bowl. Brian also found that he liked a flat white. Fully stuffed and more than happy, we started our return.

We envied all the electric scooters passing us along our route. But determination and lack of cell service disallowing us to unlock a scooter got us home. We were spent. We hydrated, napped, and cleaned up. Dinner on deck.

Looking for recommendations, our concierge suggested Camps Bay as a trendy spot for people “closer in age” to us, and the Codfather restaurant we selected did not disappoint. Unique in name and style, it did not have a menu. Rather, it was set up as a choose your own fresh fish market. The server explained the types of fish, flavor profile, texture, and recommended cooking style. Anna chose Kingklip, a popular local fish and Brian chose Tuna. The fish came on a skillet with rice and fresh sautéed veggies. Anna’s was light and flaky, and Brian’s was seared nicely. We were also given 4 sauces! Garlic butter, lemon butter, apricot jam, and hot hot chili. We liked the first 3 best. Too full for dessert, we headed home. Happy bellies and tired legs. Back to dessert, we swooped by our pantry, duh.

Tomorrows plan – you wish, wait your turn. Check back here tomorrow for day 2!
