Day 3: Fit, Funicular, Fish, Fyn, Fin

After a quick morning workout, we indulged for breakfast. Mango banana smoothies, fruit plate, veggie omelet, banana pancake and shakshuka with a top notch view. Our local guide, Charlie, picked us up in a retro VW SUV. He took us on a short drive to a close beach where he got to know us a little and then laid out the plan for the day. Essentially, head down to the Cape of Good Hope, exploring a few stops on the way. A bit of mist clouded our views early on, but we had hope on our side.

As the drive south progressed, the clouds disappeared. The views of Hout Bay and Chapman’s Peak were stunning, and the route gave us major Big Sur vibes. Once we got to Cape of Good Hope, we opted out of all the funiculars for a romaaatnic hike along the water. We took a quick detour to a remote beach for a boxer brief cool off in the ocean. Towels were scarce. Courage was not. Waves were scary. We made a poor attempt at skinny dipping. But we walked away with clear eyes, full hearts, and sandy butts.

Kalk Bay was the next stop, destination: Harbour House for lunch. The town was small with an old naval base and trading dock. After lunch we walked a few blocks in search of some caffeine. We hit some roadblocks with the scheduled electricity blackouts, but after a few re-boots to the power we were back up and running with coffee in our hands and some bomb carrot cake – it was electric. We were eager to get back to our scheduled couples massage and told Charlie to crack on.

Next Up. Fyn. Pronounced feign. An 8 course tasting menu. T’was fine indeed. Top contenders for top dish were: ostrich egg chawamushi (custard), Guinea fowl wontons, miso wagyu, and tuna sashimi. Poll is live for who selected the better dinner knife. Safe to say, one of the best meals we have ever had.
